But the changes&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;stop there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of March 2026, Texas introduced new identification requirements for vehicle registration, and another major update is scheduled to take effect in 2027.&nbsp;Here\u2019s&nbsp;what Texas drivers need to know now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-safety-inspections-were-eliminated-in-2025-nbsp\"><strong>Safety Inspections Were Eliminated in 2025<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning January 1, 2025, Texas officially ended mandatory annual safety inspections for most non-commercial vehicles. This means&nbsp;Texans&nbsp;can skip a trip to their local mechanic&nbsp;before renewing registration in most counties.&nbsp;There are a few exceptions in counties that require emissions tests, so continue reading to find out if this applies to you!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-still-have-to-pay-the-fee-nbsp\"><strong>Todav\u00eda tienes que pagar la money,&nbsp;think&nbsp;again.&nbsp;Most&nbsp;Texans&nbsp;are&nbsp;still&nbsp;required&nbsp;to&nbsp;pay the $7.50 fee, regardless of whether you get the inspection or not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas replaced the old inspection cost with&nbsp;what\u2019s&nbsp;now called the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/88R\/analysis\/html\/HB03297H.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inspection&nbsp;Program Replacement&nbsp;Fee<\/a>,&nbsp;which is distributed&nbsp;into&nbsp;three separate funds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$3.50 to\u00a0the\u00a0Texas\u00a0Mobility Fund\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$2.00\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0General Revenue Fund\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$2.00\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Clean Air Account\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For brand-new vehicles or vehicles not previously registered in Texas, the replacement fee is $16.75 and covers the first two years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-counties-still-require-emissions-testing-nbsp\"><strong>Some Counties Still Require Emissions Testing<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents of larger counties in Texas will still&nbsp;be required&nbsp;to get an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tceq.texas.gov\/airquality\/mobilesource\/vim\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">annual&nbsp;emissions test<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, El Paso, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant,&nbsp;Travis&nbsp;and Williamson counties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2026, another county is being added to that list.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;emissions test fee&nbsp;ranges throughout different counties, costing anywhere&nbsp;from $11-$27.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bexar-county-drivers-will-need-emissions-tests-starting-november-1-2026-nbsp\"><strong>Bexar County Drivers Will Need Emissions Tests Starting November 1, 2026<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning November 1, 2026, drivers in Bexar County,&nbsp;including San Antonio residents,&nbsp;will also be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dps.texas.gov\/news\/dps-reminds-texans-upcoming-emissions-test-requirement-bexar-co\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required&nbsp;to pass an emissions test<\/a>&nbsp;before renewing registration.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the old safety inspections, emissions tests focus specifically on pollutants and emissions-system performance rather than checking brakes, lights, windshield wipers, or tires.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vehicles with active check engine lights may automatically fail emissions testing in some cases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-texas-registration-rules-took-effect-in-march-2026-nbsp\"><strong>New Texas Registration Rules Took Effect in March 2026<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas introduced another major registration update on March 5, 2026. Under new Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) rules, drivers completing certain vehicle registration transactions, including first-time registrations, title transfers, and out-of-state registrations, must now provide valid, unexpired identification documents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re registering a vehicle in Texas after the 2026 rule changes, make sure you bring an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.txdmv.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/body-files\/RTB_001-26_ID_Requirements_for_Vehicle_Registration_Transaction.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acceptable form of identification<\/a>.
