An estimated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt39443\/2021NSDUHFFRRev010323.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt39443\/2021NSDUHFFRRev010323.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.7 million Americans aged 12 and older<\/a> used Kratom in 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kratom is commonly used to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/public-health-focus\/fda-and-kratom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/public-health-focus\/fda-and-kratom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-treat conditions<\/a> such as pain, coughing, diarrhea, anxiety, depression, opioid use disorder, and drug withdrawal symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different forms of Kratom are available in the U.S., from powders to chewables and liquids, and can be easily purchased online or in stores.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However, no uses for Kratom have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-side-effects-of-kratom-use-nbsp\"><strong>What are the side effects of Kratom use?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kratom has potential risks and side effects that should not be overlooked. The FDA has issued warnings about its safety and effectiveness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/kratom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Severe symptoms<\/a> have been reported among Kratom users, including psychiatric, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory issues. There is also a risk of abuse and addiction associated with Kratom use. Clinicians have observed patients experiencing a range of adverse effects, such as seizures and even death in some cases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More research is needed to fully understand the health and safety implications of Kratom use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-restrictions-apply-to-kratom-use-nbsp\"><strong>What restrictions apply to Kratom use?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014, the FDA issued an import alert for dietary supplements and bulk dietary ingredients containing Kratom, declaring it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/public-health-focus\/fda-and-kratom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/public-health-focus\/fda-and-kratom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unfit for consumption<\/a> as a drug, dietary supplement, or food additive in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several states have implemented bans or restrictions on kratom use:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alabama categorized Kratom as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, like heroin and marijuana, and banned it in 2016.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Georgia established quality and safety standards for manufacturers in 2019.
