KILLEEN, Texas — Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers partnered with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Passenger Safety Kids Safe Initiatives Program and the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Save Me With a Seat program to host its third annual Killeen Car Seat Safety Event on June 25. The free event helped local families improve child passenger safety through car seat inspections, education and the distribution of new child safety seats.

Held at the Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers Killeen office, the event brought together certified child passenger safety technicians and community members to identify improper car seat use, teach caregivers proper installation techniques and provide families with safe seating options for their children.

During the event, technicians inspected 48 child safety seats and distributed 35 new child safety seats to families in the community. Of the children whose seats were inspected, none arrived in a properly used child safety seat. Six children arrived unrestrained, and three children arrived using only a seat belt, highlighting the continued need for education and resources surrounding child passenger safety.

Proper use of child safety seats can reduce the risk of serious injury and death for children involved in crashes. In addition to protecting lives, improving child passenger safety provides economic benefits through reduced medical costs, avoidance of lost future earnings and improved quality of life. Based on established economic impact calculations, the event generated an estimated $91,038 in economic impact for the Killeen community through new seat distribution and corrected seat misuse.

“We call it a good day here at Daniel Stark if we can make one child safer,” said Dennis Moore, an attorney at Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers’ Killeen office. “A lot of people think you just put a car seat in the car and put your child in it, but there are specific guidelines for installation, positioning and when a child should transition between different types of restraints. If we can provide education and resources that help keep children safer, we are making our community a little safer.”

The event was made possible through the collaboration of local child passenger safety advocates and certified technicians who volunteered their time to work directly with families.

“Our goal is to reduce the number of child vehicle fatalities and injuries by providing education and resources on the proper use of car seats, booster seats and safety belts,” said Megan Hackworth, a program coordinator with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Passenger Safety Kids Safe Initiatives Program. “Car seats can be confusing, and it is very easy to get things wrong without understanding why or what exactly you are supposed to do. Providing families with that knowledge helps them feel confident that their children are safer.”

Nikki Holland, who attended the event with her niece and great-nephew, said the event provided valuable support for families as children grow and their safety needs change.

“She had heard about the event through Friends in Crisis, and I was happy to bring her,” Holland said. “The baby was already outgrowing the car seat from the hospital, so finding this resource was really helpful. It’s great that something like this is available for families in the community.”

Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers will continue partnering with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and TxDOT’s Save Me With a Seat program throughout 2026 to provide free car seat safety events across Central Texas, helping families access expert guidance and properly fitted child safety seats at no cost.

Families who were unable to attend the Killeen  event can still have their child safety seat inspected by visiting buckleup.tamu.edu to locate a certified child passenger safety technician in their area.
